After an intense week in the Studio, a new style emerged for the Holism series. This is still hard-edge painting, but subtle color changes soften the look. This feels organic and otherworldly.
After sketching a design with pen and ink on paper, I’ll hone it digitally, then draw the final design on canvas. Like this:
Next, I’ll lay down the color in related hues. I like to show my hand in the painting. Instead of using tape to make hard edges, I’ll brush on the paint slowly and carefully. Hard-edge can be human.
Throughout, I’m focusing on value (how light and dark colors compare to each other). Differences in value make a bold image and lead the eye around the piece. I apply up to five coats of paint to give the piece a strong presence.
Here is the completed piece. “Origin.” 36” x 36” acrylic on canvas. It’s available. Take a look! I added three dark rays emanating from the center of the painting. Now the piece is dynamic and anchored.
“Acrylic On Flesh.” Photograph. My first and forever love is finger painting, where the canvas is limitless, and expression runs free.
Can you feel the color? Grab your paint. Release the beast within.

Here are some further digital studies exploring how opposites might benefit each other. The two studies below consider solid, soft, geometric, and biomorphic shapes.
Finished the main painting from my current series: A Snarl is a Sort of Smile.
STATEMENT Who are we? How do others see us? In this painting, a totem implies the possibility of personal transformation. The figure seems entangled in its environment. Or is it happily becoming a whole being?
